Review: Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Penz Portable Vaporizer

The Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Penz is a limited edition pen vaporizer brought to you from Cloud Penz. It was made in collaboration with B-Real’s Dr. GreenThumb Glassworks brand, and even dons his thumb print (in green of course) over the black “Cloud” button.

Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Penz Limited Edition Collaboration

According to their website, Cloud Penz (not to be confused with Cloud V Enterprises) was founded in Orange County, CA by “Heavy Essential Oil experts” that were tired of inferior products. They debuted in 2012 with their first Cloud Pen.

Cloud Penz has achieved considerable success in the time since their launch, including multiple Top 3 finishes for Best Product at the HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup. Most recently, they took home first place at this year’s Bay Area Medical Cup.

Without a doubt, Cloud Penz’s rise to fame is largely centered around the newfound popularity of “dabbing” and cannabis concentrates. These cannabis extracts are typically consumed using a titanium or quartz nail that has been heated with a handheld torch.

However, vaporizer pens like the Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen, Cloud Platinum, G Pen, and Dr. Dabber provide patients with a low-maintenance means of vaporizing essential oils, waxes, and shatters.

“The limited edition Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen arrives in a black box that is stylishly branded with both the Cloud Penz and Dr. GreenThumb logos.”

According to the Cloud Penz website, the base Cloud Pen 2.0 model retails at $99.99 and is available with 5 different graphics. They also offer a micro version of the pen with a USB-charger capabilities for $79.99.

Not unlike Grenco Science, the Cloud Penz team recently started working with celebrities and big-name brands to develop limited edition pens. Currently available are collaborations with FRANK 151 and Dr. GreenThumb, both of which retail for $120.

The limited edition Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen arrives in a black box that is stylishly branded with both the Cloud Penz and Dr. GreenThumb logos. Furthering the Dr. Greenthumb theme, the front/top-side of the box is fashioned after a physician’s prescription sheet that reads “This product is prescribed to you by the Stoner of the Year” – HIGH TIMES honored him with the award back in February.

Inside the box, you will find (1) fully assembled pen, (1) medi grade funnel atomizer, (1) Cloud C-tensil dab tool, (3) silicone hygiene covers, (1) custom branded dual-compatibility charger (Wall/USB), (1) Dr. GreenThumb carrying case, and a small instructional manual.

How To Use The Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen Vaporizer

As is always the case, the first thing you will want to do when when opening your Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen unit is make sure it is charged. Plug the USB charger into the bottom of the pen and you should see a small red LED light next to the charger port – this lets you know that it’s charging. The light will turn green when the unit is fully charged, a feat that should take no longer than 2.5 hours to achieve.

In order to turn on the unit, simply press the black “Cloud” button in the center 5 times consecutively – this same action will also turn the unit off when your vapor session is complete. I always like to see pen vapes with this on/off functionality, as it prevents the button from being pressed in your pocket and wasting any concentrates loaded in the cartridge.

Using the Cloud C-tensil or another dab tool from your arsenal, you will want to load the cartridge with the concentrate touching the heating element (coils and fiber wick). In turn, we have found that runny concentrates tend to work better with combustion pens like this. Consider using a hot dab tool to slightly melt down your concentrates if they are in more of a solid consistency like shatter or budder.

“The Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen has an automatic shut-off feature that stops the cartridge from heating longer than 20 seconds.”

It’s smooth sailing from there. Simply press the “Cloud” button on the front of the pen to engage the heating element and inhale.

The Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen has an automatic shut-off feature that stops the cartridge from heating longer than 20 seconds. This is more than enough time to take a nicely-sized pull of vapor, and serves to prevent the atomizer from overheating and melting.

It should be noted that these cartridges are known to burn out every now and again. I’m not yet sure on the estimated life for each one, but will update this review as soon as I learn more. Nonetheless, Cloud Penz sells extra Medi Grade Coils and Medi Grade Funnel Coils for $19.99 apiece. I wish they would sell the cartridges in bulk too – 3-pack, 5-pack, etc. – but that’s a different story altogether.

How Could The Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen Be Improved?

  • It could be difficult for older consumers (especially those with arthritis) to take the pen apart. I had trouble taking out the atomizer myself at first
  • The vapor produced can develop a bit of a burnt taste. This is likely due to some concentrate being heated through conduction, not convection
  • Seems to run through concentrate very quickly – one load of the cartridge only got me about 2 good hits of concentrate
  • The burnt taste raises concerns. I’m not sure what materials should be considered, but I would like Cloud Penz to explore a healthier option

Cloud Pen 2.0 Is A Discrete Pen That Delivers Big Hits Of Vapor

Overall, I would consider the Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen, which is essentially an upgraded Cloud 2.0 vaporizer, to be a solid choice for people in search of a discrete low-maintenance unit to vaporize their cannabis concentrates. Of course, this pen is not so great for anyone who only plans to medicate with dried cannabis flowers (buds).

“The discreteness that the Cloud 2.0 offers, and the big hits of vapor it produces are obvious upsides for most patients.”

The discreteness that the Cloud 2.0 offers, and the big hits of vapor it produces are obvious upsides for many patients. I’m sure this is part of helped it win best product at the Bay Area Medical Cannabis Cup.

It’s no secret that we here at Medical Jane are not the biggest proponents of the vaporizer pen craze, but it’s obvious that they will be around for years to come. It’s hard to beat the portability offered by units like the Dr. GreenThumb X Cloud Pen, and the branding of this particular pen is another plus its favor.

That being said, it can be debated whether a portable pen vaporizer is worth dropping $120. My take: if you really love B-Real/Dr. GreenThumb and have a few extra dollars to spare, then this limited edition collaboration is for you. Otherwise, the base Cloud 2.0 model will get the job done just the same, and it retails at $99.99.
