Illinois Medical Marijuana Bill To Become Law Today
After months of waiting, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is finally set to sign legislation today that will make the state the 20th nationwide to legalize cannabis for medicinal use. The measure lays out a four-year pilot program for the state that will require caregivers & patients to undergo background checks and will allow seriously ill patients to carry up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis. New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan Signs MMJ Bill
New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan officially signed a medical marijuana bill into law Tuesday making state the 19th to do so in the country. The bill, HB 573, was approved by the state Senate back in May, bringing the state one step closer to being the last state in New England to approve a medical marijuana law. The new law, which took effect with the governor’s signature, allows patients with cancer and other qualifying conditions to possess up to two ounces of cannabis from nonprofit alternative treatment centers. The Marijuana Business Access To Banking Act
Last Wednesday, U.S. Reps. Ed Perlmutter (D-Golden), and Denny Heck (D-Wash.) introduced a bill that aims at correcting the federal banking rules surrounding medical marijuana industry. The Marijuana Business Access to Banking Act, which is backed by eighteen U.S. House members, would prevent federal regulators from prohibiting or dissuading banks, credit unions and other financial institutions from lending money to or taking deposits from state-legal medical cannabis companies. Because of current federal banking laws, marijuana-related businesses are forced to operate as cash-only enterprises — even in Colorado and Washington where cannabis is legalized recreationally. Florida Begins Collecting Signatures For MMJ Bill
John Morgan, the “for the people” guy who’s law firm’s advertisements are seen frequently on Tallahassee TV, is sponsoring a new Florida petition-gathering organization called “People United For Medical Marijuana” — or PUFMM for short. Florida has pushed for the legalization of medical marijuana before, but organizers have never been able to accomplish the feat of collecting the thousands of necessary signatures to make the ballot.
